What actually causes facial wrinkles?

My mother always used to wear sunglasses (and still does) on sunny days, saying that squinting in the sun causes wrinkles around the eyes. But don't these wrinkles go away once you're out of the sun? Do facial expressions actually cause wrinkles? What actually causes facial wrinkles?
The cells divide more slowly, and the inner layer of skin (the dermis) starts to thin. Fat cells beneath the dermis begin to atrophy (diminish). In addition, the ability of the skin to repair itself diminishes with age, so wounds are slower to heal. The thinning skin becomes vulnerable to injuries and damage.

The underlying network of elastin and collagen fibers, which provides scaffolding for the surface skin layers, loosens and unravels. Skin then loses its elasticity. When pressed, it no longer springs back to its initial position but instead sags and forms furrows.

The sweat- and oil-secreting glands atrophy, depriving the skin of their protective water-lipid emulsions. The skin's ability to retain moisture then diminishes and it becomes dry and scaly.

Frown lines (those between the eyebrows) and crow's feet (lines that radiate from the corners of the eyes) appear to develop because of permanent small muscle contractions. Habitual facial expressions also form characteristic lines.

Gravity exacerbates the situation, contributing to the formation of jowls and drooping eyelids. (Eyebrows, surprisingly, move up as a person ages, possibly because of forehead wrinkles.)

Wrinkles can have a profound impact on self-esteem. Indeed, the stigma attached to looking old is evidenced by the fact that Americans spend more than $12 billion each year on cosmetics to camouflage the signs of aging. Our current society places a premium on youthfulness, and age discrimination in the workplace, although illegal, has stalled many a person's career. Indeed, the emotional ramifications of aging explain in large part why the cosmetics industry and plastic surgeons thrive. What actually causes facial wrinkles?
I agree with Great Dane completely, exactly what I was going to say!!
Your mother is right.

Skin wrinkles are a result of the aging processes. Wrinkling is caused by habitual facial expressions, aging, sun damage, smoking, poor hydration, and various other factors.

So your mother is wise to wear sunglasses on sunny days. I hope she is a non-smoker and that she remembers to use a good moisturising cream on her face.
I've heard a lot about that. From a lot of different places. I mean, it probably does, but that's probably not the only cause. I've hear frowning causes wrinkles. I've also heard that stress is a big cause of wrinkles.
Facial expressions don't actually cause wrinkles. Wrinkles are caused when the collagen in the skin breaks down with age, but mostly with damage from the environment such as smoking, pollution and especially the sun's damaging rays. Once your skin is damaged, it's easy for wrinkles to develop. Children makes all kinds of faces, but don't get wrinkles as their skin is in optimal condition.

If you use sunblock, don't smoke and use preventating skin care (Vitamins A, C %26amp; E), you will keep your skin in the best condition.

HTH : )
Yeah. that's why they say smile, you'll use less muscle than frowing and have less wrinkles when you're older.
The best cobat to wrinkles is good old antioxadents! Eat a good variety of bright fruits and veggies! Avoid booze and smokes! No smoking and red wine occasionally!(good antioxadents!)
smiling and laughing

I'm gonna make some of those crows feet ones when or if I meet the right woman.
Ultimately, time causes facial wrinkles and for guys, shaking the slimy tree branch does it too.
the wrinkles are caused by age, as we age the skin loses the agent that gives it elasticity called collagen.

when we squint the eyes get small creases, if you do this over time it gets harder for the skin to bounce back because the collagen has been gradually depleted from the skin, parts will remain creased and other areas of the skin begin to sag because the collagen also helps to keep the skin tight against the flesh.
If facial expressions are left long enough then probably. But the number one cause for wrinkles would be cosmetic surgery. But really it doesn't matter because they will appear no matter what, you can't avoid them forever. :)
You will be led to believe that the sun will but in all actuality it is the toxins in your body that cause people to wrinkle. People in other cultures who are exposed to the sun constantly have few if any wrinkles as they age. It makes sense because other cultures do not use the pesticides, herbicides, radiation, etc. in their food supply.
no facial expressions do not cause wrinkles. It depends on how much elasticity you have in your skin. Gravity will ultamately take it's toll. as we get older our skin loses that elasticity and cause wrinkles. Using a moisturizer daily will help repair.
The sun dose promote wrinkles not only squinting but it takes the natural oil out of your skin, wrinkles also just happen with age, you start losing the elastic from your skin. vitamin E and oatmeal cream or skin lotion will help slow that down.
Well it's just the wear and tear process that your face goes through everyday. Even if sunscreen and avoiding the sun delays wrinkle appearance, it's bound to catch up to you someday.
yes that does cause wrinkles,

smoking is another big one, check out Jennifer Anniston's lips sometime, she's a big smoker - part of the reason Brad left her I have heard. Anyway, occasionally you can see where she's starting to get the smokers wrinkles on her lips.

mmmm her lips, ok well I hate smokers but I would make an exception for Jen - for at least one night ;)
